The Burning House is a tumblr where people submit photos of what they would take if their house was burning down. I’ve submitted my photo there, but most of the pictures are higher quality, so I’m hedging my bets and posting it here while the iron is hot. #idioms

Living in a dorm at University, we have fire drills and burnt toast false alarms a lot, and I tend to just grab my key card, boots, jacket, and scarf, because it is so very cold outside. Sometimes I grab my purse, containing many practical things, so I can grab food if we’re stuck outside for long. But if I think about my priorities and possessions I couldn’t replace easily, or that mean a lot to me, this list, shown in the picture, would be the result:

I would take:

  • Grover hat
  • Failte, my panda bodyguard
  • Dispatch water bottle
  • Fluke ukulele
  • Glasses (for style and vision)
  • Pearl earrings and necklace from Grandmere
  • Passport
  • iToca (contains “it’s ok” playlist to deal with the possible trauma)
  • My university key card
  • My Vade Mecum (MacBook Pro)

Disclaimer: This post is about the process, not the result. You may be wasting your time by reading it.

Premise: I am left-handed (and proud!) The QWERTY keyboard is preferential to the left-hand. 56% of keystrokes happen on the left-side. More than 3000 English words can be written with the left hand alone (i.e. reverberates), while only 450 are possible with the right hand (i.e. lollipop). There are various models of  letter frequency in English, one order from most used to least is: ETAON RISHD LFCMU GYPWB VKXJQ Z with the left-hand letters in bold.

Question: Do internet acronyms follow the pattern of 56% left-handed frequency? What is the letter frequency for the most used internet acronyms?

Hypothesis: The top 2 vowels are on the left-side, and I think it’s mostly the vowels that creates this imbalance. Most words are not vowel-initial, so their frequency should go down in a study of acronyms. This means that the top consonants TRSDF would need to appear more frequently to maintain this ratio. I think overall, left-handed frequency should go down in acronyms.

I’m trying to figure out what I can do with my life that will benefit the world. Take as a given that I’m good for something, I just have to find or invent it. Two years ago, I started tagging words on Wordnik.com. I wanted to understand the unexpected spelling similarities between words that do not sound like each other. I used C and V to stand in for consonants and vowels in terms of  alphabet graphemes, not IPA phonemes. Some linguists got mad. I understand why,  but tagging convowels was an important outlet for me at the time, and I don’t regret that I’ve left a mark on wordnik. [and then suddenly…]

House of Geeks is the website of a group of friends who play video games every weekend in Beaverton, Oregon. I was asked to make a logo, which was too much pressure, so I made a series of banners that could rotate as the header for the site. The site has never been completed, but every so often, I make a new banner. I have made 24 banners. Enjoy.

On Monday, I went to A Work of Heart art studio to a class called Stenciled, Stamped & Screen Printed. Andrea Chebelou, who runs the studio, was my teacher.  With her help, I made a Propaganda Panda block stamp, and a radish screen for screen printing. (I also made a skull and cross bones stencil, but my cutting-out skills are awful, and he ended up missing a nasal cavity.)
