{"id":1000,"date":"2012-08-17T18:36:10","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T17:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/?p=1000"},"modified":"2012-08-17T18:58:59","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T17:58:59","slug":"a-souvenir-spoonerism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/?p=1000","title":{"rendered":"A Souvenir Spoonerism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did I tell you guys I made a Spoonerism this year?<\/p>\n<p>A Spoonerism is a phrase where the speaker unintentionally flips the beginning of the word with the beginning from another word from the phrase. This can be one sound, as in &#8216;go <strong>sh<\/strong>ake a <strong>t<\/strong>ower&#8217; for &#8216;go <strong>t<\/strong>ake a <strong>sh<\/strong>ower&#8217; (remembering that <em>sh<\/em> is actually one phonetic unit, [\u0283] ). The switch can also happen with\u00a0larger consonant clusters as in &#8220;<strong>ch<\/strong>ipping the <strong>fl<\/strong>annel&#8221; (where <em>ch<\/em> represents the affricate [t\u0283] ).<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Spoonerisms are named after William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930), an Oxford professor who occasionally misspoke during his classes in a way that accidentally created these phrases, such as &#8220;You have hissed all of my mystery classes.&#8221; Spooner did not flip his words that often, but it became his legacy, which genuinely bothered \u00a0him. He was a smart man, but couldn&#8217;t be sure that people attended his lectures for his knowledge once this reputation was created, and once said to a crowd &#8220;You don&#8217;t want to hear a speech, you just want me to say one of those &#8230; things.&#8221; : ( Poor Bill Archie.<\/p>\n<p>Spoonerisms are not my favorite word thing.\u00a0Sure, they are fun, but they never stick with me for long. (<a href=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/?p=721\">Portmanteaus and eponyms<\/a> are more my style).<\/p>\n<p>So anyway. I came up with a Spoonerism at some point this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bird watcher &#8211;&gt; Word botcher.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yayyy. It&#8217;s great because it describes a person who has a slip of the tongue, a Spoonerism-maker. <em>Yayyy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>*Fun fact* The verb <strong>botch<\/strong> has been in English since at least 1382, though it was originally a neutral term meaning &#8216;to fix or repair.&#8217; It became negative and has meant &#8216;to fix or repair poorly, to mess up&#8217; since 1530ish. <strong>Botch<\/strong> sounds like one of those words those damn kids are always coming up with in their street slang, but no.
