Hypothesis<\/strong>: There should be compound words in Spanish songs, because they are very productive in Romance languages, so they should show up in songs.<\/p>\n

Data<\/strong>: Lyrics found online for 10 songs in Spanish, each by a different artist, that I listen to a lot but have never thought about in regards to compounds.<\/p>\n

1. La Tortura<\/a> (2005) – Shakira – 0<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Completamente<\/a>\u00a0(2006) – Chetes – 0
\n(though some argue that\u00a0-mente<\/em> adverbs are compounds)<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Atrevete te te<\/a>\u00a0(2006) – Calle 13 – 0, almost 1
\n“Esc\u00e1pate, qu\u00edtate el esmalte”
\nquitaesmalte means ‘remove-polish’ (polish remover)<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Malo<\/a>\u00a0(2004) – Bebe – 0<\/p>\n

5. Nada es para siempre<\/a>\u00a0(2005)- Luis Fonsi – 0<\/p>\n

6. La Camisa Negra<\/a>\u00a0(2005) – Juanes – 0<\/p>\n

7. Pl\u00e1stico<\/a>\u00a0(2004) – JD Natasha – 0<\/p>\n

8.\u00a0Me Gustas T\u00fa<\/a>\u00a0(2001) – Manu Chao – 0<\/p>\n

9. Soy Infeliz<\/a> – Lola Beltr\u00e1n – 0<\/p>\n

10.\u00a0Adios Muchachos<\/a>\u00a0(1934) – Carlos Gardel – 0<\/p>\n

Results<\/strong>: Nope. In a survey of 10 songs, none of them have compound words. Weird.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/strong>: Compound words are not peppered into Spanish pop music the way I thought they would be. Kinky have a song called Cornman, but that’s an English compound and the song never mentions that word.\u00a0Maybe try a different 10 songs? Oh well.<\/p>\n
