If I can include it in my research, I&#8217;d like to. Is a <em>flapjack<\/em> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a type of jack<\/span>, or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a thing<\/span> (not a jack) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">that flaps jacks<\/span>?<\/p>\n<p><em>Flap<\/em> from <em>flapjack<\/em> is listed in the OED under definition 4a. It has Germanic relatives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-905\" title=\"OED flap 3\" src=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/OED-flap-3-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/OED-flap-3-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/OED-flap-3.png 558w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Do yourself a favor and act out the definition of <em>flap<\/em> as given above. Do it <strong>now<\/strong>. I defy you not to giggle while you do it. Descriptive words are amazing. You really get the feeling that you&#8217;re manhandling whatever it is between your hands. Wrestle it to the ground! Flap it!<\/p>\n<p><em><!--more-->Jack<\/em> on the other hand, is elusively odd. It may be a generic version of the name Jacques, which begat Jack, and can sometimes mean generic food. In that case, a <em>flapjack<\/em> is a kind of <em>jack<\/em> (f00d), so it&#8217;s an <strong>endocentric V+N compound<\/strong>. Yay. If it were<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> a thing that flaps jacks<\/span>, it might be a spatula, or a food so wonderful that it would make jacks (generic guys) flip their lids&#8230; er flap &#8217;em. That does not seem to be the case, but the OED is not confident about the origin about <em>jack<\/em>, so I went looking afuera, and I got off-topic&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Looking for extra-OED <em>jack<\/em> sources, I found both noun and verbs of <em>jack <\/em>on etymonline, and the end of this particular definition gave me uncontrollable bouts of laughter. Twice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/etymonline-jack-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-904\" title=\"etymonline jack 2\" src=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/etymonline-jack-2-300x40.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/etymonline-jack-2-300x40.png 300w, https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/etymonline-jack-2.png 745w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>WHY IS PENIS IN QUOTATION MARKS? It&#8217;s not a euphemism. This is the most basic medical term. It&#8217;s like writing, &#8220;&#8230;and by penis, of course, I mean penis.&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.etymonline.com\/index.php?term=jack&amp;allowed_in_frame=0\">Etymonline<\/a> also uses italics to reference words, but they didn&#8217;t do that here. Is it a direct one-word QUOTE? From where? You can&#8217;t plagiarize <em>penis<\/em>, it&#8217;s one word.\u00a0<em>Penis<\/em>\u2122? Back in the practical world, I guess quotations are used to match the &#8220;to masturbate&#8221; earlier in the sentence, though I still argue they could have been italicized just as easily. He&#8217;s a man, in the sense of &#8220;penis.&#8221; Ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>So before I add this word to my endocentric compound list, let&#8217;s talk about the meaning.\u00a0<em>Flapjacks<\/em> mean two different foods to me. First and foremost, they are <em>pancakes<\/em> which I associate with log cabins, diners, and Paul Bunyan and his ox, Blue. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitbemidji.com\/bemidji\/paultales.html\">FACT<\/a>: One time his crew made flapjacks so big that men used bacon skates on the griddle.<\/p>\n<div>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/DSCI0319.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-902\" title=\"5.0M DigitalCAM\" src=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/DSCI0319-e1337874205894-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/DSCI0319-e1337874205894-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/DSCI0319-e1337874205894-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/DSCI0319-e1337874205894.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a> Annie and Emily at the Paul Bunyan Statue in NoPo, 2007\n<p>The second definition of <em>flapjacks<\/em> only emerged for me this year in England, where they represent fruity vegan-friendly granola snacks made from oats and syrup. They have become a favorite Fairhurst snack for me in York. They keep for several days, are slightly nutritional yet definitely have some sugar in &#8217;em. (Leap to the near future to see my post about <em>&#8217;em<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Photo-on-2012-05-25-at-15.45-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-908\" title=\"Photo on 2012-05-25 at 15.45 #4\" src=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Photo-on-2012-05-25-at-15.45-4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Photo-on-2012-05-25-at-15.45-4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Photo-on-2012-05-25-at-15.45-4.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Oaty British<\/em>\u00a0<em>flapjacks<\/em> are first attested in a cookbook in 1935, while <em>pancake<\/em> <em>flapjacks<\/em> (what a lovely compound collision) are first cited in 1620, adorably spelled with the <em>j<\/em> as an <em>i<\/em>. <em>Flapiacks<\/em>. (Remember that if you&#8217;re ever in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XMSK-wq3jlg\">Pancake Holy Grail<\/a> situation.)<\/p>\n<p>I suppose they are similar flat floury oaty filling foods, but I&#8217;m not quite getting the leap.\u00a0I&#8217;ve tweeted @lynneguist about her thoughts on the subject. She clarified the Atlantic distinction for someone in the comments of a post about <a href=\"http:\/\/separatedbyacommonlanguage.blogspot.co.uk\/2006\/07\/baked-goods.html\">Baked Goods<\/a>\u00a0in 2006, but I get no closer to the connection.<\/p>\n<p>The first citation of pancake\u00a0<em>flapjack<\/em> is in 1620 from a British guy (they were all British then, though) in London.There are historical records of recipes from Middle English, so why is\u00a0the oldest British entry is only from 1935? This\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cookit.e2bn.org\/historycookbook\/1166-flapjacks.html\">interwar cookbook<\/a>\u00a0says they were a WWI rationing invention. Perhaps pancake flapjacks were modified for rougher ingredients, but they were so ubiquitous during wartime that they got popular in their poor form, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=17335538\">integration of hot dogs<\/a> into Japanese cuisine after living in WWII internment camps. Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Summary:<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Flap<\/em>: Germanic<br \/>\n<em>Jack<\/em>: Romance (French)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flapjack<\/strong>: endocentric [V+N]N compound, mixed roots, describes a thing not a person, flap is a transitive verb, it&#8217;s not technical vocabulary, it&#8217;s normally plural, probably because there are always many, not because of something weird, like <em>sawbones<\/em>.
