Then I went to the OED. I skipped the 1st definition and saw this one, which I immediately started saying in an outrageous manner:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/oed-buttwoman.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-992\" title=\"oed buttwoman\" src=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/oed-buttwoman.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/oed-buttwoman.png 578w, https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/oed-buttwoman-300x92.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Imagine what an irate version of that definition might sound like. Ok? Now listen to my ludicrous reading here:<\/p>\n<object width=\"100%\" height=\"81\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"https:\/\/player.soundcloud.com\/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F55440377&show_comments=true&auto_play=false&color=ff7700\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed width=\"100%\" height=\"81\" src=\"https:\/\/player.soundcloud.com\/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F55440377&show_comments=true&auto_play=false&color=ff7700\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><\/embed><\/object>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that <em>butt<\/em> is another name for some kinds of flat fish, such as sole and fluke. You can see that root in the word <strong>halibut<\/strong>. The OED&#8217;s best guess for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/83536\">halibut<\/a> is that <em>hali<\/em> means holy, named for the tradition of eating halibut on holy days. I&#8217;ve commented on Anatoly Liberman&#8217;s second <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.oup.com\/2012\/07\/mackerel-word-origin-etymology\/\">excellent fishy post<\/a> about this strange series of events. \u00a0I hope he responds. I hope he never reads it. I hope he adopts me. I hope I erase this part.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So.<\/strong> Halibut means <em>holy fish<\/em>, but really, it&#8217;s fun to only change the first half, and pretend that halibut means <em>holy butt<\/em>. Because I&#8217;m childish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/holyhalibut.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-993\" title=\"holyhalibut\" src=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/holyhalibut-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/holyhalibut-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tankhughes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/holyhalibut.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This also means that a\u00a0<em>buttwoman<\/em>\u00a0is just a female fishmonger, a sassy seafood vendor. Nothing inappropriate after all.
