December 10, 2012My initial reaction to the announcement that Oxford Dictionaries US had chosen gif as a verb as its 2012 word of the year was one of underwhelmtion. Previous winners of the American Dialect Society’s WOTY have been occupy, app, and tweet, which seem to encapsulate the trends of a whole year more completely than gif does, which I initially felt only represented a small corner of the internet.
…but then I thought about it.
2012 is the first year that I’ve ever been in a gif. I’ve been giffed! I was roped into this gif, peer pressured by the enthusiasm of 4 ladies with dialects different from my own. Oh the foreign lifestyle! Being swayed by someone’s argument based solely on their vowels… So yeah basically I’m in this dumb gif where we’re trying to have attitude and be sassy with snapping, but just looks silly. I don’t know how they got me to be in the front of the group, but there I am.

November 28, 2012In my trek up the mountain of internet superstardom (is that my goal?) I’m in an episode of A Show with Ze Frank, a lovely youtube programme. My favorite episodes of A Show are Chase That Happy and the Kickstarter video. Other Ze Frank-related videos like 5 Things and Young Me, Now Me may also bring joy to your day.
Basically, at the beginning of every episode, a fan (sportsracer) introduces the show, and at the end, another viewer sings their own version of a ‘bye bye song.’ I provided this episode’s bye-bye song. If the embedded video is not working, you can find the video HERE.
Internet famous! *happy dance*

September 17, 2012My first computer was a laptop called kooBi. It was an iBook. Its accompanying iPod was called doPi. It was great, went to Spain, and got a lot of stickers on it. Then poor kooBi aged and got tired. The disc burner stopped working, and that kind of feature is important to me, so I got a new one, a MacBook which I named McBook. Its iPod shuffle sidekick was called McPod. For graduation in 2008, I was given an iPod Touch named iToca, which is still with me. McBook‘s life was tragically cut short when it drowned in the summer of 2009, leading me to buy a MacBook Pro. I’m very attached to my laptops, the first 2 are living in a box in California, and I’ve taken this new one with me everywhere (Korea, Walnut Creek, Germany). But! It doesn’t have a proper name.
After 3 years of companionship, it’s still the new guy, and there’s some kind of smugness that comes with the title Pro that I do not enjoy associating myself with. So… back in 2009 I covered up the MacBook Pro label with a sticker that no one understands, because it’s in Latin. The label says Vade Mecum.

April 17, 2012Well folks, it’s been a wild ride.
This project was directly motivated by Ms. Shelley and the PDX Fun-a-Day project. On the record, the York Uke 30 project took a little longer than 30 days due to unforeseen schoolwork and illness. To view the full playlist, go to the York Uke 30 on Youtube.
I think I’ve been the most shocked at the videos with the most views: Public Property, I Am A Wizard, and Decomposing Composers. I’m not sure if I filled a certain ukulele youtube void, or if it was just the luck of the digital draw.
From the player’s perspective, my favorite songs are the ones in which I sing the instrumental breaks:
24: Friend is a Four Letter Word by Cake
21: Something by the Beatles
17: Sad Songs and Waltzes by Cake
13. Where Is My Mind? by the Pixies
8: Then I Met You by The Proclaimers
6: Mother of Pearl by Nellie McKay
4. I’ll Follow the Sun by the Beatles
